Arden-Arcade Middle School Investments

  • Background

San Juan Unified is committed to investing in facilities in the Arden-Arcade region that will support the district’s projected enrollment for the coming years.

District staff has closely analyzed forecasted enrollment figures and capacity studies for the Arden-Arcade area. Middle and high schools in the Arden-Arcade region are expected to see growth in enrollment in the coming years. High schools are expected to be able to accommodate this projected growth, however, current middle school resources in the Arden-Arcade area cannot accommodate this level of enrollment. A projected net growth of nearly 600 students in grades 6-8 is expected by 2025.

Additionally, the district has engaged in a long-term process to specifically identify how to best serve students in grades 6-8 who were being served at Encina Preparatory High School in a grade 6-12 model. These conversations started in 2018 and culminated in February 2020 with the conclusion that separating grades 6-8 into their own middle school community would best serve the needs of students and families. Plans were implemented to create the new middle school program for the 2021-2022 school year with facilities considerations and needs being further analyzed.

    Planning

A plan was approved by the Board of Education in January 2022 to help accommodate the growth expected at the middle school level and provide a dedicated home to Katherine Johnson Middle School. The plan includes:

Giving Arcade Fundamental Middle School a boundary (as it is currently an open enrollment school) and adjusting middle school boundaries across the Arden-Arcade region.

    • Building a new Arcade Fundamental Middle School to increase capacity.
    • Relocating Katherine Johnson Middle School from the Encina Preparatory High School campus to a new facility at the current Creekside property.
    • Relocating Creekside Adult School to a location yet to be determined.
