English Learner / Multicultural Education
The San Juan Unified School District presently serves over 10,000 English Learners. This population comes from over 72 different languages. English Language Learners in the San Juan Unified School District are placed in immersion and mainstream programs taught in English.
San Juan Unified's major language populations include:
- Spanish
- Persian (Farsi/Dari)
- Pashto
- Arabic
- Russian
- Other Non-English languages
- Ukrainian
English Language Development
The San Juan Unified staff work closely with school sites to ensure all students receive English Language Development (ELD) instruction during the school day. Typically, students receive a minimum of 30 minutes per day of English language support. Additional supplemental support for long-term English learners is also available.
Language Support
Staff have been hired to support our Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, and Spanish-speaking families and students. They provide resources and serve as a bridge between schools, families, district and community-based organizations.
