  • Project update: Nov. 16, 2022

    On Tuesday, Nov. 15, San Juan Unified’s Board of Education held a workshop to review and discuss the final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR). The project team presented the board with an updated proposed site plan, an overview of the EIR process and analysis. After discussion and public comment, the board adopted a resolution that certifies the final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR), adopts the CEQA Findings of Fact and Statement of Overriding Considerations, adopts the Mitigated Monitoring and Reporting Program (MMRP), approves the Katherine Johnson Middle School new construction project, and directs that a Notice of Determination be filed for the project moving the project forward.     Update: The public comment timeframe is closed as of Oct. 31, 2022.

    The Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the potential relocation of Katherine Johnson Middle School to the Creekside site is now available for review below. The public will have until Oct. 31, 2022 to submit comments about the EIR, and all comments received during this period will be included and responded to in the Final EIR.   • Project Background

    A new Katherine Johnson Middle School is anticipated to be built on the current Creekside property, located at 2641 Kent Drive in Sacramento. The potential new campus will have the capacity to accommodate 650 students and looks to include a new maker space, an outdoor learning area, classroom buildings and a multipurpose room. 

    Potential Project Timeline:

    • February 2022 - Design work begins
    • February-May 2022 - Conduct technical studies, including traffic studies
    • July 2022 - Draft CEQA documents
    • September 2022 - Public review of CEQA documents
    • November 2022 - Finalize CEQA documents
    • TBD 2023 - Construction expected to begin
    • TBD 2024 - Construction expected to be completed

    An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) formal scoping meeting was held on June 30 at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Creekside Adult School (2641 Kent Dr., Sacramento). Community members were provided an opportunity to see another overview of the proposed project, receive an explanation of the anticipated CEQA process and provide input on which environmental issues should be covered in the project’s forthcoming EIR.


    A community workshop was held on June 16 at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Creekside Adult School (2641 Kent Dr., Sacramento). Information was shared about the process the project staff will use to design and build the potential new campus. The workshop also provided community members an opportunity to share feedback on the communication process throughout the project. A copy of the presentation can be found below.
