ADULT EDUCATION STUDENTS EARN DIPLOMAS, CITIZENSHIP AND MORE AT 2019 GRADUATION
On June 13, Sunrise Tech Center-- San Juan Unified School District’s school for adults-- celebrated the accomplishments of 37 high school graduates, 58 G.E.D. recipients, 33 clinical medical assistants and 10 newly naturalized United States citizens. The successes of each of the graduates from the class of 2019 made for a prideful, emotional night for the students and their families.
San Juan Unified’s Adult Education program has been a part of the district and community for decades, and has been a welcoming home for adults who seek to continue their education, regardless of their age or previous experience with school.
Those in attendance were able to enjoy the musical stylings of the Sacramento Concert Band under the direction of Grant Parker, as well as a few truly motivating student speeches regarding the graduates’ journeys through education.
Joshua Carter-- one of the commencement speakers graduating with a high school diploma-- took his opportunity to speak as a chance to encourage his fellow graduates and remind them of some very important words.
“I am successful,” said Carter, who then prompted his peers to repeat the same phrase along with him. The graduates all joined-- “I am successful.”
One of the most unique portions of the adult education graduations is the celebration of clinical medical assistant graduates, who have completed hundreds of hours of hands-on work in professional medical environments.
Furthermore, the Sunrise Tech Center takes this opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of students who persisted through the process of becoming United States citizens over the course of the school year.
Lynn Bartlett, principal of San Juan Unified’s Adult Education program, summarized the efforts and successes of all of her students with a quote by Albert Schweitzer, reminding them to “do something wonderful, [because] people may imitate it.”

*************************************************************************************************************************We serve busy adults through independent study working toward a high school diploma, where they meet once a week with their teacher, but complete the course work at home when life slows down and the house is quiet. We also serve many who want to prepare for, pass and attain the GED Certificate, an alternative for some who find it a valuable necessity to advance in the workforce.
We teach English as a Second Language to support the parents in our community that need to enter the workforce and/or become citizens. Speaking English at home is essential as they support their own children in our school system.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE CLASSES
We have courses for adults who need to attain new vocational skills to get back into the workplace. Pricing affordability and quality education is our focus.

We also teach courses that keep adults active and engaged in other areas of interest, such as music, art, digital media and photography. Adults tell us stories of how these courses have enriched their lives.

Others share stories about the huge impact these classes have in helping adults find new significance in life through new avenues of learning and self-expression.San Juan Unified School District Adult Education is fully accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
