English classes here at Sylvan are based on the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards provide clear and consistent learning goals to help prepare students for college, career, and life. The standards clearly demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level, so that every parent and teacher can understand and support their learning. Each English class now has its own set of computers allowing teachers to use technology more regularly for various lessons and research. With increasing frequency students are creating and sharing work product electronically. We offer a period or 2 of honors English at each grade level. Students are selected for these classes based on test scores, teacher recommendations and student desire for a challenge. We use the district new "Amplify" digital learning system instead of traditional text books. Sylvan also starts each day with a 20 minute reading period. Students bring a book to school (or get one from our library) and quietly read. They also take online quizzes when they finish a book to earn points and rewards. If you have any questions about English at Syvlan email the department chair or one of the teachers.
