Language is our window to the world! At Thomas Kelly we provide all of our students the opportunity to learn more about our world through exploration of language.

Did you know about 550 million people in the world speak Spanish? It is one of the 6 official languages used at the United Nations, and it is the official language of 20 countries. The United States now has the second largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico. Learning language allows us to ask new questions, find new answers, express ourselves even better and in new ways, and become knowledgeable leaders. What a great way to learn and grow!

Our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) aims to create global citizens and peaceful leaders. The skills learned in Spanish class enrich student growth, cultural knowledge, communication and study skills. All grades have exposure to Spanish language books and classroom words. Grades TK-2nd graders have 1 class of 40 min. per week. 3rd - 5th graders attend 2 sessions per week and Spanish independent study homework begins in 4th grade.

Feel free to explore this website and learn more Spanish at home! Many of our favorite songs are posted here as well as our latest studies. Check out our Inquiry section! Of course, as we always discuss, the real reward is the life-long learning that occurs during this valuable inquiry process.

For more information about language instruction in the IB Primary Years Programme, see http://www.ibo.org/pyp/ You are welcome to visit our Spanish classes and feel free to send any questions to Señora Katz-Amey at jessica.katz-amey@sanjuan.edu.

Spanish Speaking Countries of the World
  • Welcome to 4th and 5th grade Spanish!

Our students receive enrichment through Spanish "homework" in the form of independent inquiry projects. The homework is sent home as a paper flyer and also posted online. Extra copies are available on the Spanish bulletin board near A8.

Click here to see resources for the most recent homework that we are working on. Extra homework pages are always available in the hallway on the Spanish bulletin board.
