What test subject should students take first?
In what order should students take the GED® test subjects? While there’s no “best” order, GED Testing Service offers the following strategy that has led to noticeable improvement in student GED® test success. Katie Stoecker, former Michigan-area GED® program administrator and current GED Testing Service student advisor suggests the following:
1. Start with Reasoning Through Language Arts. The critical thinking, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills needed for RLA are also needed for Science and Social Studies. Plus, RLA has the most strenuous of the constructed responses – once students can write for RLA, they’ll be prepared to write for the other test subjects.
2. Take Social Studies next. With the foundational skills in place, students just need to brush up on their social studies background knowledge and practice the shorter Social Studies extended response.
3. Move on to Science. By now, students have a lot of the skills they already need. Focus on brushing up their science background knowledge and developing their data analysis skills.
4. Finally, it’s time to tackle Mathematical Reasoning. The skills needed for the Math test are very different than the skills needed for the other three tests. It’s also a good idea for students to pass the other three tests before moving on to Math to help boost their confidence and encourage them to finish.
