• El Sereno is located on the Fair Oaks Annex campus at 10700 Fair Oaks Blvd. in the San Juan district and serves the entire district. El Sereno is WASC accredited, so credits earned at El Sereno are transferable to other high schools or higher learning institutions.

    The successful El Sereno student is very self-motivated. Junior and Senior students tend to be the most successful with this alternative learning style. El Sereno also accepts sophomores upon approval.  Freshmen are considered in the 2nd semester upon approval.  Independent study uses the same district-adopted textbooks and curriculum in all subjects, it is the unique delivery method that distinguishes between attending a traditional high school and attending an independent study high school. Students are held to the same district and state standards as any other California high school student.

    District staff may seek the services from El Sereno in two ways:
    1) Voluntary Transfer- referring a student to attend El Sereno as a full-time student

    or

    2) Co- Enrollment- The counselor at the referring school would refer a student to attend El Sereno after school hours for credit recovery.

    Voluntary Transfer
    To refer a student to El Sereno as a full-time student, please follow the following steps:
    a) Complete and email the El Sereno Voluntary Transfer Application;
    b) Once the application has been received and confirmation of approval with El Sereno, an orientation appointment date will be scheduled;
    c) A withdrawal/check-out sheet should be completed and brought to orientation with student and parent;
    d) If a parent/student is coming to observe then "a" and "b" must still be done pending that decision.

    Co-Enrollment
    To refer a student after school for co-enrollment credit recovery, please follow the following steps: a) school counseling staff will submit a Co-enrollment Enrollment Application with a transcript attached. b) if the application is accepted the student will be added to the co-enrollment waiting list (an email with a spreadsheet of the accepted students is emailed to the referring counselor) c) when a space is open for the student a master teacher will call the student to schedule the first appointment.  NOTE: Co-enrollment is based on seats available.
