SYLVAN MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE
Parents/Guardians,
Sylvan Middle School has the responsibility to establish and maintain appropriate standards of dress that support a positive, appropriate, and safe learning and teaching environment. Students must dress in a manner that will be decent, not hazardous to the health and safety of others, and not disruptive or distracting from the educational program of the school.
In addition, no articles of clothing or school materials (including hats, backpacks, book covers, binders, etc.) may have pictures, printing, or writing that is crude, vulgar, profane, gang affiliated, racially, ethnically, or religiously intolerant . Nor shall those articles promote violence, the use of drugs or alcohol, or which in the opinion of the Sylvan Middle School staff and administration, is disruptive to the learning environment.

TOPS, SHIRTS, BLOUSES, SWEATSHIRTS:

No exposed midriff. The midriff should remain covered when arms are raised above the head

No spaghetti straps or tank tops

No tube tops, halter, bare shoulders, one-shoulder tops, see-through or fish net fabrics, or exposed “cleavage.”

PANTS, SHORTS, SKIRTS:

Inseam on shorts must be at least 3 inches

Skirts must extend beyond the fingertips when standing and arms fully extended straight down; opaque (not see through) tights must be worn underneath any skirts that do not meet the length rule

Pants must be worn in a manner that does not expose undergarments (no sagging).

No pajama style pants or shirts.

JACKETS, VESTS, COATS:

May only be worn over approved shirts and tops

Must be removed in class

Trench coats are not allowed

FOOTWEAR:

No flip flops/thongs/sliders, spiked heels, steel toe shoes, slippers, or “Heelies.”

All footwear must have a strap around the heel.

Medical exceptions to the footwear policy must be approved by administration and a doctor’s note provided

HEADWEAR:

Students are prohibited from wearing headware indoors (hats, hoods, beanies, etc.), unless in observance of their religion or for medical reasons approved by administration.

JEWELRY AND ACCESSORIES:

Apparel, jewelry, accessories, body markings, backpacks, and binders must be free of writing, pictures, stickers or any insignia which promote violence or disruptive behavior, appear to be crude, vulgar, profane, sexually suggestive, or which advocate racial, ethnic, or religious prejudice, or use of drugs or alcohol, or gangs.

Must also conform to the same standards listed above.

Sunglasses must be removed indoors and outdoors upon request.

Crucifixes worn as a necklace must be worn under clothing.

SPIRIT WEAR:

Students may wear any approved school spirit, club, or athletic shirt.

School staff may impose specific dress requirements to accommodate the special needs of certain sports and/or classes.
* Students may not wear PE clothes to their other classes
NOTE: It is important to recognize that the dress code may change as new information is gathered as to specific meanings or if disruption on campus occurs because of a specific symbol, color combination, logo, etc. Parents and students will be made aware of these changes as they occur; compliance with them is essential.
The school reserves the right to determine and enforce this dress code and to establish what constitutes a violation.
