My name is Max Johnson and I am a senior at Rio Americano High School, and I have been nominated for the Civitas Senior Award. I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself so that you know me better not only as a student and member of civitas but overall as a person so that you can be an informed voter. Along with being a member of the Civitas program at Rio, I have also taken part in various community events and activities involving policy and education. This coming March will be my third year as a volunteer at the California Academic Decathlon where I act as a proctor and a speech judge. I am also an advocate for Team Will an organization raising awareness about childhood cancer. Along with such community service involvement, I am also an intern at Assemblymember Jim Cooper's office of the 9th District of the California State Assembly. At my internship I write talking points for the assemblymember's speeches and I address the positive and negative events that go on the community by writing letters to constituents. My internship has also provided me with multiple opportunities to be an active member in my community. This year I have participated in a back-to-school fair sponsored by the assemblymember that provided over a thousand under privileged children with school supplies and health services to prepare them for the new school year. I also participated in a Turkey-Giveaway that provided over a thousand families with a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving along with multiple other free health services. Through my internship I was also able to develop a senior project that I am very passionate about. I am developing a political science program at the California State Capitol for high school kids in under privileged areas in them am comfortable speaking to the variety of social groups at Rio, and I am always willing to listen to all those who privileged areas in Assemblymember Cooper's district. These students will not only learn about the legislative process but will also learn how to become active member in their communities. I am extremely excited for the launch of this program and it has been an amazing experience being such a large part of its creation. Finally I want to tell you the role Civitas has had on my development as a person. One of the reasons I applied to the Civitas program so I could gain the knowledge that would allow me to make sure the voices of the Rio student body can be heard. I want to be able to be a strong advocate for my school and utilize my public speaking skills to the best of their capabilities. Civitas has provided me with a thorough understanding of government and politics, and has influenced me to want to pursue a career in public service. I believe I am the right candidate for this award, because I have allowed the ideals that have molded Civitas mold me as a person and thus I believe I represent what the Civitas program is truly about. Now as I go off to college and further pursue my passion for politics I hope you will contribute to my passion by voting for me for the Civitas Senior Award.
