Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does San Juan Unified School District transport all school-age children?

    Child Bus

On January 25, 2011, the San Juan Unified School District Board of Education approved the elimination of all non-mandated home-to-school transportation. Mandated transportation services, such as special education and alternative education programs, are not affected.

When should my child be out at the bus stop?

Please have your child ready and at the bus stop five (5) minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time. The driver will stop at the designated stop. If the child is not ready to be transported, the driver will continue on the route. It is your responsibility to watch for the bus.

What if my child can not be left alone in the afternoon?

If your child can not be left alone in the afternoon, please be home and ready to receive your child at the school dismissal time. Due to absenteeism, the drop off time will occasionally vary. If no one is home, the student will be returned to school and it will be your responsibility to pick up your student at that time.

Is it okay to have my child dropped off at home without adult supervision?

Yes. The bus driver will provide you with a "Student Information" sheet, which has a leave alone authorization section on the form. If you wish for your child to be left without adult supervision, we must have the form at the transportation office before we can begin dropping off with out adult supervision.

Whom do I contact if I have a new address or day care change?

If you should move or have a day care change, please notify the Special Education Field Office at 916-971-7525 as soon as possible prior to the change request. Changes may take up to five (5) days to implement.

When will I know what time and route number my child will have?

Prior to the start of school in August, your child's bus driver(s) will contact you with the route number, pick up time, and drop off time. If you do not receive a phone call three days prior to school beginning, please call the Transportation Department at 916-971-7076

Will the bus driver(s) have any paperwork for me on the first day of pick up?

Yes. The bus driver will provide you with a Student Information sheet. This form allows you to inform the Transportation Department of concerns and requirements in regards to your child. Additionally, it notifies the department as to whether your child may be left without adult supervision in the afternoon. If you wish for your child to be left without adult supervision, we must have the form in the transportation office before the beginning of school, otherwise, you will need to be present to meet your student. You may return the paperwork to the bus driver.
