Social Studies
The Social Studies Department includes grades sixth through eighth. Sixth grade covers Ancient World history from around 2 million B.C.E. to 600 C.E. with topics covering Early Man to the Fall of the Roman Empire. Seventh grade covers Medieval World history from around 600 C.E. to 1750 C.E. covering topics from the Fall of Rome to Enlightenment. Eighth grade covers U.S. history from 1733 C.E. through 1911 C.E. with topics about the Thirteen Colonies to the Industrial Revolution.
In addition to teaching the California Content Standards, we have also aligned our teaching with the CCSS. These standards include the use of primary and secondary sources, Expository writing, Speaking and Listening, using evidence to support arguments, and completing research for a variety of topics.
In an effort to incorporate these standards, we are using a curriculum called DBQ, (document based questions). These lessons use primary and secondary documents with analysis and writing to support the CCSS.
