El Camino’s Performing Arts is thrilled to welcome Mr. Travlos, as our new Theater Director! Mr. Travlos moved to Sacramento to lead our Drama department into a new era, while building on all the success of past decades.
“I am looking forward to helping my students become the best citizens they can be,” Travlos says, “and theater is a great way to explore what that means to them.”
A native of the Bay Area, Mr. Travlos graduated from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City, and did his undergraduate work in Creative Writing & Literature in Montreal. After working a time in the East, Travlos returned to Northern California and has worked in multiple capacities across the Bay Area, including directing shows for Bay Area Children’s Theatre in Berkeley and founding his own acting company, “Altered Sight Theatre Company,” in Oakland.
When asked if his choice of first play is telling of his theatrical preferences, Travlos laughs and says, “I love all kinds of theater! In fact, I hated Shakespeare when I studied it in high school. It wasn’t until I learned how to act it at Conservatory that his work started to make sense and I could see that his themes are very relatable.” Travlos is also really looking forward to the Spring musical, which will probably be the first theater show in the new Performing Arts Center. “I think the PAC is going to offer great opportunities for a lot of El Camino students, not just theater and music kids.”
While the new home of the Eagle’s theatrical endeavors will be great, Travlos has plans to take El Camino’s thespians out into the community, too. “Creating a sense of community, both within the program and with the neighborhood, is one of my most important goals.”
