Hello! My name is Pam
Chao and I am the parent of Alec Sumner, a second year Civitas Student. Civitas
is a special program, both in the people involved and in its perspective. Each teacher in this program goes above and
beyond, and the program teaches so much by regarding students as citizens in
the global and local communities. I have
some experience volunteering in the program, and have had the pleasure of
working with Civitas students on Youth Court /Restorative Justice Program.
I am a Sociology Professor at American River College, and
have been teaching there for over twenty years.
My focus is on race relations and other inequalities. I have experience with local and national advisory
boards. I love working with learners and
educational programs. In addition to my
teaching, I am currently developing an semester-long Equity Institute for
faculty, teach an eight-week Diversity in the Classroom: A Reaching and Learning Institute open to all
Los Rios faculty every spring, was the founding Director of the ARC Community
and Diversity Center, and was the past Director of the ARC Center for Teaching
and Learning.
