Students in both third grade classes got to work with a partner to build a structure that followed particular criteria. Structures needed to be at least 5 inches tall, have a roof, be able to move, and withstand winds. Along with criteria, students had constraints for this project as well. In partners they were given 12 index cards, 4 paperclips, and 18 inches of masking tape. For this lesson, students only built their structures. They will be testing them soon to see which structures hold up and what they have in common.
