How to Choose a Model

  • All students will be enrolled in distance learning at their school to start the 2020-2021 year in alignment with local health guidance and state health orders.

Families may also choose to enroll their student(s) in the TK-8 homeschool program or 9-12 independent learner programs. Visit the program pages to find more information as well as online enrollment application forms.

TK-8 Home School

  • San Juan Unified offers an established TK-8 Home School program. In a homeschool program, the parent/guardian delivers instruction for 4-6 hours per day directly to their student. An advisory teacher helps the parent/guardian with curriculum, pacing and materials selection designed to meet grade level and state standards.

    As part of the program:

    • Students receive four to six hours of daily instruction from their parent/guardian and complete coursework for each subject.
    • Parents or guardians meet regularly with the assigned teacher.
    • Families receive curriculum, resources, teaching tips and educational advice.

Please note, homeschool is DIFFERENT than distance learning. In the distance learning model, teachers provide instruction to students remotely instead of the parent/guardian. Families are enrolled in distance learning by default for 2020-2021 and do not need to make any changes if they wish to remain enrolled.

9-12 Independent Learning

  • Independent Learning for students in grades 9 through 12 is designed as an option for self-directed learners. Students in the program will be paired with a master teacher who will provide guidance toward course completion and remaining on track for graduation. Because students will remain enrolled at their high school, they'll also be able to access athletics and extracurricular activities.
