Welcome to Arcade Middle School,
This year Arcade is continuing its journey as a STEAM school. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These students are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
Research shows that the middle-level years are some of the most challenging times in a person’s life. To support students during this time we understand the importance of addressing the whole child. Arcade is committed to the academic, emotional, and social success of all students. To do this, we use a variety of strategies. One of these is the incorporation of professional Teacher Time into our schedule. This means that the school day ends an hour early every Thursday to provide regularly scheduled time for teachers to collaborate about student-centered topics that support academic success.
Each day begins with Homeroom. This allows everyone to have a calm start to their day. Homeroom allows for student discussions and distribution of school news and important documents as well as forming positive relationships with adults. Deadlines, due dates and other information regarding clubs, sports, or honor society are covered in the announcements. In addition, the homeroom teacher is the first point of contact for parents with questions or concerns about their student's academic and social achievement. In addition to building positive relationships teachers will re-inforce the 8 Keys of Excellence. The 8 Keys of Excellence character education program guides young people toward a positive future full of confidence, motivation, creativity, team work, leadership and valuable life principles. The academic planner is an additional tool used to support student success. Students are required to write their daily class work and homework assignments in the planner. Teachers also use the planner as a means to communicate with parents. We encourage parents to check the student planner on a daily basis. Every three weeks the academic planner has a sheet provided where students will record their grades, calculate their grade point average and make a plan for growth. This process provides an opportunity for homeroom teachers to conference with students as well as another way for the school to communicate with parents. This home-school communication is a key element of student success. Of course, parents should feel free to contact the school whenever they have a question or concern, or if they want to tell us about things that are going well.
In addition to the homeroom and core curriculum, students at Arcade participate in physical education and an elective. In physical education, students participate in traditional activities, but the teachers also focus on sportsmanship, fitness, and nutrition. In the elective classes, students are provided with opportunities to develop skills in art, music and STEM, while some students participate in student leadership activities. We believe this comprehensive curriculum, combined with high academic expectations, best supports student success.
As an educator, I believe that the academic and social success of all students is a collaborative endeavor requiring the participation of all stakeholders – students, parents, school and district staff, and community partners. I invite you to participate in this endeavor.
