    What is Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)?

    What are the expectations for students in the AVID program? 
     
     
    AVID students are expected to maintain at least a “C” average, to study a minimum of two hours per night, and to enroll in college preparatory classes.  The AVID student’s goal is to enroll in a four-year college upon high school graduation.
     
     
    What are the expectations for AVID parents?
     
     
    AVID parents are expected to encourage their students to achieve academically and to attend or become involved in school activities.
     
     
    What do students do in the AVID program?
    1. Students practice and develop writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading skills.
    2. Students develop the skills of note taking, studying, test preparation, critical thinking, and organization.
    3. Students receive academic support from college and peer tutors in collaborative groups.
    4. Students are motivated to pursue academic excellence through cultural and college field trips, classroom guest speakers, and AVID team building activities.
    5. Students receive assistance in preparing for PSAT and SAT/ACT college testing, writing college application essays, filing out college applications, applying for financial aid, and completing the A-G college course work including AP and Honors classes.
     
    How do you recognize an AVID student? 
     
     
    The AVID student carries a binder and school planner, takes notes in all academic classes, and is always prepared for class.  Also, he or she is a positive role model for others and remains “on track” for college acceptance.
     
     
    How many AVID classes are offered at San Juan High School? 
     
    There are four classes currently: AVID I, AVID II, AVID III, and AVID IV  
     
     
    What are the AVID results? 
     
    92.8% of AVID graduates in California have enrolled in college.  After two years, 89% of those who began college are still enrolled.
