Middle School Boundary Adjustment Process

History and Background

San Juan Unified has engaged in a long-term process to specifically identify how to best serve students in grades 6-8 who were being served at Encina Preparatory High School in a grade 6-12 model. These conversations started in 2018 and culminated in February 2020 with the conclusion that separating grades 6-8 into their own middle school community would best serve the needs of students and families. Plans were implemented to create the new middle school program (Katherine Johnson Middle School) for the 2021-22 school year.

A plan was approved by the Board of Education in January 2022 to help accommodate the growth expected at the middle school level and provide a dedicated home to Katherine Johnson Middle School. The plan included:

  • Giving Arcade Fundamental Middle School a boundary (as it is currently an open enrollment school) and adjusting middle school boundaries across the western region.

  • Building a new Arcade Fundamental Middle School to increase capacity.

  • Relocating Katherine Johnson Middle School from the Encina Preparatory High School campus to a new facility at the current Creekside property (2641 Kent Drive in Sacramento).
