SJUSD Cell Phone Policy. Phones Away. Minds Engaged.

SJUSD Cell Phone Policy. Phones Away. Minds Engaged.

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, students at elementary, K-8, and middle schools will keep personal mobile devices stored away throughout the school day, including during lunch and passing periods.

The change is designed to support student learning by reducing distractions, increasing engagement and encouraging more face-to-face interactions among students. Research and community feedback show that limiting access to phones and other personal devices during the school day can help students stay focused, participate more fully in school activities, and strengthen connections with their peers.

Students may still bring phones and other personal mobile devices to school. However, devices must remain stored and inaccessible during the school day in accordance with school procedures. Arcade Students will keep phones and other electronic devices in backpacks throughout the day.

Violation 1: Teacher warning*

*After September 1, a teacher warning will no longer be a step, and a student violation will begin at violation 2.

Violation 2: Phone is locked inside the classroom cabinet

  • Referral form filled out

Violation 3: Office referral

Families can continue to contact students through the school office when needed, and students will have access to office support if they need to reach a parent or guardian. School emergency communication procedures will remain unchanged.

Thank you for your partnership as we work together to create a focused, supportive learning environment for all students. For additional information about the district's mobile device expectations, please visit www.sanjuan.edu/mobilepolicy.
