Board Briefs: April 23, 2024
Here are a few highlights from the April 23 board meeting (the agenda and the agenda packet are available):
Board hears update on San Juan Youth Voice Advocates
Staff and students provided the board with an update on the ongoing work of the San Juan Youth Voice Advocates student leadership program. The group is a team of high school students who elevate student voice in San Juan Unified by engaging students in listening sessions to help inform the district's LCAP and site plans.
The group provided an overview of the qualitative data collected through listening sessions and outlined recommendations for actions based on districtwide findings. In the 2023-24 school year, the advocates held 36 listening sessions and reached 583 students. View the full presentation to review themes and recommendations.
Updates provided on new proposed high school courses and instructional materials adoptions
Staff provided the board with an update regarding new proposed high school courses for the 2024-25 school year. New proposed courses of study provide a high level of rigor, deeper opportunities for study and promote college and career readiness. These courses include:

Science: Advanced Placement (AP) Physics C: Mechanics

Math: Advanced Placement (AP) Pre-Calculus, Data Science

Art: Art and Ethnic Studies

English: English 3: Ethnic Studies
In addition, the board discussed new instructional materials adoptions for several courses, including:

History-Social Science: Psychology; Sociology

Science: AP Physics C: Mechanics

World Languages: Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture; International Baccalaureate Spanish 1 and 2
The board will take action on these proposed courses and the instructional materials adoptions on May 14.

The board adopted a resolution proclaiming May 8 as California Day of the Teacher. The board also adopted a resolution proclaiming the week of May 6-12 as National Nurses Week and May 8 as National School Nurse Day.

The board accepted the 2022-23 audit report as prepared by Crowe LLP, the district’s independent auditor.

The board adopted a resolution declaring the intent to convey a permanent easement at Katherine Johnson Middle School to SMUD. A public hearing will be held on May 14.

The board discussed the bargaining interests of the Teamsters Union Local No. 150.
