Here are a few highlights from the April 28 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):

Board hears update from San Juan Youth Voice Advocates 

San Juan Youth Voice Advocates (SJYVA) student leadership program provided the board with an update on their work. Staff and students provided an overview of the qualitative data collected from over 32 listening sessions with 561 students in grades 4-12 and outlined recommendations for action based on districtwide findings. SJYVA student leaders also shared personal impact statements regarding their experiences in the program.

Update provided on instructional technology

Staff provided a report related to the use of instructional technology in San Juan Unified schools and classrooms. San Juan Unified has been working diligently to support the robust use of instructional technology, ensuring that students are prepared for a rapidly evolving world. Since 2020, efforts to support instructional technology have continued to grow as students and staff have gained access to technological tools. 

The team provided an overview of the district-supported instructional technology tools; current data on instructional technology use and its impact on students and staff; current work on generative artificial intelligence (AI); and information about enrichment programs for students that center on instructional technology.

  • The board adopted resolutions recognizing the week of May 6-12 as National Nurses Week, May 6 as National School Nurse Day and May 13 as the California Day of the Teacher. 
  • The board held a public hearing on the San Juan High School Science Modernization Project and authorized it.
