Board Briefs: Feb. 24, 2026

Here are a few highlights from the Feb. 24 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):

Board hears an update on arts education

Staff provided an update on arts education programs in San Juan Unified and the ongoing implementation of Proposition 28 funding. Arts education is a core component of San Juan Unified’s educational experience for all students. With Proposition 28 funding, approved by California voters in 2022, the district has more resources to create rich learning experiences for students in the arts, including new courses, increased arts-focused instructional minutes during the day, additional before- and after-school programs, and more opportunities for students to showcase their talents in the community.

However, with additional resources comes increased challenges, including staffing. To address some of these challenges, San Juan Unified has applied for a waiver to allow the use of staffing funds for materials, supplies, and service agreements, so more students can access arts education through community partners and increased materials.

Additionally, the board adopted a resolution recognizing March as Arts Education Month.

In other news…

  • The board adopted multiple resolutions on reducing or discontinuing particular kinds of services and the corresponding amount of certificated staff who will be reduced as a result for TK-12, Adult Education and Early Childhood Education.
  • The board also adopted a resolution reducing or discontinuing certain classified positions because of a lack of work and/or a lack of funds.
  • The board discussed and approved updates to each school's Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP).

The next regular board meeting will be held on March 10 at 6:30 p.m. Visit www.sanjuan.edu/boardmeeting for details. You can also view videos of prior board meetings at www.sanjuan.edu/boardvideo
