Here are a few highlights from the Feb. 27 board meeting (the full agenda packet is available):

Board hears update on arts education and Proposition 28

Arts education has been a core component of San Juan Unified’s educational experience for all students and the continued support of the arts has allowed programs to thrive. With the new Proposition 28 funding, approved by California voters, the district has more resources to create rich learning experiences for students in the arts. Staff provided the board with an update on both current programs and also new opportunities made possible by additional arts funding. The full presentation is available.

San Juan Unified administers the USDA's National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program at all schools. Meals offered follow meal patterns established by USDA and meet weekly dietary specifications. At San Juan Unified, an average of 27,993 meals are served daily. The full presentation is available.

In other news…

  • The board adopted a resolution recognizing the month of March as Arts Education Month. Additionally, they adopted a resolution proclaiming March 3-9 as National School Social Work Week.
  • The board approved the proposed revisions to two policies: Nondiscrimination in District Programs and Activities, and Complaints Concerning Instructional Materials.
  • The board approved multiple resolutions on reducing or discontinuing particular kinds of services and the corresponding certificated staff that will be reduced as a result for TK-12, Adult Education and Early Childhood Education. The board also approved a resolution on reducing or eliminating certain classified positions due to lack of work and/or lack of funds.
