Board Briefs: Jan. 28, 2025
Here are a few highlights from the Jan. 28 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):
Staff provides update on the Katherine Johnson Middle School campus transition
Staff provided an update for the board on the collaborative steps taken to support the midyear move of Katherine Johnson Middle School from the Encina High School campus to the new school facility at 2641 Kent Drive. The presentation outlines the relocation process and planning efforts for Katherine Johnson Middle School, which include key milestones such as the groundbreaking at the Kent Drive location in April 2023, the announcement of construction delays in May 2024, the campus opening ceremony on Dec. 17 and the opening day set for Jan. 7.
To support students, staff and the community, a collaborative team was created. The collaborative team focused on the timing and the logistics of the move, communication strategies, and the impacts a midyear move might have on students and staff. To support these efforts, the team engaged students and families through surveys, translated materials and weekly updates. Regular outreach and communication occurred with the nearby neighbors, as well. Staff were provided minimum days during the week of Dec. 16-20 to allow them to pack and set up their classrooms at the new site.
For the opening ceremony on Dec.17, staff provided a resource fair, campus tours and a celebratory rocket launch to mark the occasion. Throughout the process, key partnerships with various district departments, labor partners, and local organizations like the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates were critical. Free bikes were donated to students and traffic improvements near the new campus ensured safe routes to school. For the following steps, Katherine Johnson Middle School will continue to monitor academic and attendance data and community feedback and refine logistics and procedures based on post-move experiences.
Board receives update from the Maintenance and Operations department.
With over 80 sites, San Juan Unified’s Maintenance and Operations team works hard to run an efficient operation that effectively achieves its goal of providing safe, clean and well-maintained facilities. Staff provided an update on the department's structure, staffing, properties supported, work order processes, deferred maintenance projects and capital improvement projects.
