Board Briefs: June 23, 2026

Here are a few highlights from the June 23 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):

Board discusses e-transportation and student safety; approves revised board policy

The board received a report on the growing use of e-bikes, e-scooters and other electric transportation devices among students and discussed ways to support safe travel to and from school.

The discussion included current laws, safety considerations and educational efforts aimed at helping students and families make informed decisions when using e-transportation devices. Board members also explored opportunities to strengthen partnerships with local agencies and community organizations to promote safe riding practices and reduce risks for students.

Following discussion, the board approved revisions to the district’s safety board policy, allowing only Class I e-bikes for use at elementary, middle and K-8 schools. All other forms of e-transportation, including electric scooters and electric skateboards, will not be allowed on school grounds at elementary, middle and K-8 schools starting Oct. 1, 2026.

The report highlighted the district's ongoing commitment to supporting student safety both on and off campus.

Board reviews California School Dashboard local indicators

The board received an update on San Juan Unified's California School Dashboard local indicators, which measure district progress in areas such as basic services, implementation of state academic standards, parent and family engagement, school climate and access to a broad course of study.

These indicators help provide a more complete picture of student experiences and district performance beyond standardized test scores.
