Board discusses new proposed high school courses
The board discussed several proposed high school courses designed to ensure student choice and instructional alignment with the Strategic Plan, Local Control and Accountability Plan and California’s State Standards. Proposed courses include:
- Science:
- The Science of Food
- Math:
- Financial Math
- Math Modeling
- Traffic Analysis and Engineering
- English
- Middle Years Programme (MYP) 4 Language and Literature: Ethnic Studies
- English 9: Ethnic Studies
- Social Studies:
- Chicano Studies
- Middle Years Programme (MYP) 5 United States History and Ethnic Studies
- Art:
- Music and Ethnic Studies
- Career Technical Education (CTE):
- Animation I: Introduction to Animation
- Animation II: Intermediate
- Animation III: Advanced College Preparatory
- Electives:
- Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies
- Podcasting and Storytelling
- Science Olympiad
- Principles of Athletic Performance

Board action is anticipated on April 8.
Board hears update on bond projects
Staff provided an update on current construction projects for the 2016 Bond Measure P. Recently completed projects include:
- Modernization of Earl LeGette Elementary School’s campus
- Modernization of Arcade Middle School’s campus
- New campus and relocation of Katherine Johnson Middle School
- New stadium and sports complex at Mesa Verde High School
- Modernization of Mariemont Elementary School classroom
Projects that are underway or forthcoming include:
- San Juan High School stadium modernization - 2026
- Encina High School campus modernization - 2027
- Sylvan Middle School gym, classroom/support service space and parking lot project - 2027
- San Juan High School science classroom modernization - 2027

In other news…
- The board adopted several recognition resolutions proclaiming:
- April 5-11 as the Week of the Young Child
- April as School Library Month
- April 6-12 as Adult Education Week
- Staff provided the board with a technology update and an overview of current projects within the technology services team.
- The board held a series of public hearings and passed resolutions approving student safety projects at Bella Vista High School, Andrew Carnegie Middle School, Mary Deterding Elementary School, Pasadena Avenue Elementary School and Pershing Elementary School.
- The board approved the revised and amended Board Governance Handbook.
