Board Briefs: Sept. 23, 2025

Here are a few highlights from the Sept. 23 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):

Board hears literacy update and passes resolution

Staff provided the board with an update regarding TK-12 literacy teaching and learning in San Juan Unified. The district’s current achievement data indicate that a high percentage of students are currently performing below grade level in literacy. As a result, San Juan Unified is implementing actions to support the acceleration of literacy learning at both the district and site levels. These actions include districtwide professional learning, the use of quality curriculum and best instructional practices, and leadership at various levels to ensure that all students have access to high-quality literacy instruction. The board adopted a resolution supporting evidence-based literacy practices aligned to the Science of Reading.

Update provided on attendance improvement initiatives

The board heard an update on the district’s attendance improvement initiatives for the 2025-26 school year. Student absenteeism patterns exacerbated by external factors such as weather emergencies and social media threats have continued to impact overall student attendance.

The district's attendance improvement initiatives seek to consistently reduce chronic absenteeism and increase attendance rates. The initiative is based on a tiered system of supports, ranging from districtwide actions to more targeted and intensive supports. Staff shared updated district data on student attendance rates and chronic absenteeism, along with highlighting the latest intervention strategies being utilized for chronically absent students and those who are most in need of support.
