Board Briefs: Sept. 8

Board Briefs: Sept. 8

Here are a few highlights from the Sept. 8 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):

Board adopts resolution to make a provisional appointment for Trustee Area 1

Following the resignation of Trustee Abid Stanekzai, the San Juan Unified Board of Education has chosen to fill the vacancy representing Trustee Area 1 through a provisional appointment.

Under the California Education Code, the board has 60 days from the vacancy to either make a provisional appointment or call a special election.

To be eligible for appointment, an individual must be at least 18 years old, reside within Trustee Area 1, be a registered voter and be otherwise eligible to hold public office.

With the board’s decision to pursue a provisional appointment, the district will launch an application and recruitment period for interested community members. A board subcommittee will review applications to confirm candidates meet eligibility requirements. The board will then interview all eligible candidates during a public, open-session meeting.

Following the interviews, the board will select a candidate for provisional appointment by majority vote. The appointment will take effect immediately, and the selected individual will serve as the Trustee Area 1 representative through November 2028.

Board hears update on summer learning programs

Staff provided an update on the district’s 2026 summer learning programs and the opportunities provided to TK-12th grade students. The presentation highlighted the extensive planning, implementation and impact of summer learning, including the intentional coordination and preparation that supported program delivery, the range of learning experiences offered to students and evidence of student participation, engagement and outcomes. 2026 summer programming included special education, credit recovery, academic enrichment, expanded learning, and readiness opportunities designed to meet students' diverse needs and interests. In collaboration with school sites, district departments, staff, and community partners, these programs provided students with engaging learning experiences while extending opportunities for academic growth, connection and support beyond the traditional school year.
