Board member resignation creates vacancy in Area 1
San Juan Unified School District Board of Education Trustee Abid Stanekzai has submitted his immediate resignation from the board as he and his family have relocated outside of district boundaries.
Stanekzai represented trustee area 1, which reaches from Business 80 in the north, to Fair Oaks Blvd. in the south and stretches from Ethan Way in the west to Watt Ave in the east. Schools in this region include Dyer Kelly, Howe Avenue, Cottage and Greer elementary schools, Thomas Edison Language Institute and Encina High School.
Within 60 days, the board must elect to call a special election to fill the seat, or make a provisional appointment. The board is expected to discuss the option during its Sept. 8 meeting and may take action on Sept. 8 or Sept. 22 to choose a method.
