Breaking barriers: How key staff build confidence in English learners

At San Juan Unified School District, students from diverse backgrounds enter the classroom with different experiences, strengths and challenges.

For many English learners, stepping into a new school, in a new country, with a language they do not fully understand can feel overwhelming. But thanks to the support of English language development (ELD) teachers and bilingual instructional assistants (BIAs), students do not just learn English; they find their voice and the confidence to use it.

Many students start their journey feeling hesitant and unsure of their abilities. The fear of making mistakes often holds them back from participating in class. 

Karin Springer, ELD teacher at Kingswood K-8, shared, “The biggest growth I’ve seen is that confidence to be willing to share an answer, whether it’s right or wrong.”

With the encouragement of their ELD teachers and BIAs, students not only learn English but also gain the confidence to navigate school, build friendships and chase their goals. The journey is not always easy, but with the right support, every student has the opportunity to succeed.

شکستن موانع: چگونه استادان ELD و دستیاران آموزشی دو زبانه (BIA) اعتماد به نفس زبان‌آموزان انگلیسی را تقویت می‌کنند

در حوزه تعلیمی سن هوان، شاگردان با داشتن فرهنگ‌ها و پیشینه‌های گوناگون به صنف جمع میشوند و هر یک تجربیات، توانایی‌ها و چالش‌های مخصوص به خود را دارند. برای بسیاری از آنان، ورود به یک مکتب جدید در کشوری ناآشنا و با زبانی که هنوز به‌طور کامل بر آن مسلط نیستند، می‌تواند چالش‌برانگیز و نگران‌کننده باشد.

با این حال، به لطف تلاش‌های استادان تقویت زبان انگلیسی (ELD) و دستیاران آموزشی دو زبانه (BIA)، شاگردان نه تنها زبان انگلیسی را می‌آموزند، بلکه اعتماد به نفس لازم برای استفاده از آن را نیز به دست می‌آورند. این حمایت‌ها باعث می‌شود که آنان بتوانند در محیط آموزشی رشد کنند، با همسالان خود ارتباط برقرار کنند و به اهداف تحصیلی و شخصی‌شان نزدیک‌تر شوند.

کارین اسپرینگر، یکی از استادان تقویت زبان انگلیسی در مکتب کینگزوود K-8، در مورد تغییرات مثبت در شاگردان اش می‌گوید:  “بزرگ‌ترین پیشرفتی که در آنان مشاهده کرده‌ام، رشد اعتماد به نفس است. شاگردان جرأت پیدا می‌کنند که پاسخ‌های خود را با دیگران به اشتراک بگذارند، بدون ترس از اینکه ممکن است پاسخ ‌شان درست یا نادرست باشد.”

در آغاز این مسیر، بسیاری از شاگردان با تردید و نگرانی مواجه هستند و ترس از اشتباه کردن، مانع از مشارکت فعال آنان در صنف می‌شود. اما با حمایت‌های مداوم استادان و دستیاران آموزشی دو زبانه، آنان به تدریج بر این ترس غلبه می‌کنند و مهارت‌های زبانی خود را تقویت می‌نمایند.

یادگیری یک زبان جدید و تطبیق با محیط آموزشی تازه، همیشه آسان نیست. اما با داشتن راهنمایان و مربیانی دلسوز، هر شاگرد این فرصت را خواهد داشت که توانایی‌های خود را شکوفا کرده و به موفقیت دست یابد.

Rompiendo barreras: Cómo el personal escolar genera seguridad en los estudiantes de inglés

En el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Juan, los estudiantes de diversos orígenes ingresan al salón de clases con diferentes experiencias, fortalezas y desafíos.

Para muchos estudiantes de inglés, entrar en una nueva escuela, en un nuevo país, con un idioma que no entienden completamente puede resultar abrumador. Pero gracias al apoyo de los maestros de desarrollo del idioma inglés (ELD, por sus siglas en inglés) y los asistentes de instrucción bilingües (BIA, por sus siglas en inglés), los estudiantes no solo aprenden inglés; encuentran su voz y la confianza para usarla.

Muchos estudiantes comienzan su camino sintiéndose indecisos e inseguros de sus habilidades. El miedo a cometer errores a menudo les impide participar en clase. 

Karin Springer, maestra de ELD en Kingswood K-8, compartió: "El mayor crecimiento que he visto es la confianza para compartir una respuesta, ya sea correcta o incorrecta".

Con el apoyo de sus maestros de ELD y los BIA, los estudiantes no solo aprenden inglés, sino que también adquieren la confianza para navegar por la escuela, hacer amistades y perseguir sus metas. El camino no siempre es fácil, pero con el apoyo adecuado, cada estudiante tiene la oportunidad de ser exitoso.
