“Building up” to the school year: summer 2024 construction roundup
All summer long, San Juan Unified School District and its construction partners have been hard at work on the highly-anticipated campus modernization projects. Keep reading to learn more about the newest facilities in San Juan Unified.
Arcade Middle School
Arcade Middle School’s campus and school logo experienced a transformative summer. The administration office, multipurpose room, classroom wings and library have been completed. Special classrooms such as the “pHabLAB” and the media studio are also complete and furnished with the necessary equipment for students to experience hands-on learning. In addition to the new campus buildings, Arcade also refreshed its school logo, which is proudly displayed in different areas throughout the campus.
Arcade’s new 21st-century standard facilities are further enhanced by the bold red artwork throughout the school. In the classroom wings, you will find science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics-themed artwork in the hallways. You will also find these themes throughout the administration office and “pHabLAB.”
Looking ahead to the completion of Arcade’s new campus, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. for Arcade’s modernization project. This event will precede the school’s Back to School Night. For more information about this project and the upcoming ribbon cutting ceremony, please visit Arcade’s construction webpage.
Katherine Johnson Middle School
The countdown to completion continues for Katherine Johnson Middle School’s new campus at 2641 Kent Drive.
Just over two miles away from the Encina High School/Katherine Johnson campus, the new Katherine Johnson campus now features a stunning, nearly-complete administrative office building. The classroom wings are also a step closer to completion with new carpets and painted walls. The restrooms in each wing have been equipped with sinks, toilets and partitions.
The progress at Katherine Johnson’s new campus is visible from the street to any passersby. As construction continues, we are looking forward to starting school at the new campus on Jan. 7, 2025. For more information about this project, please visit Katherine Johnson’s construction page.
Mariemont Elementary School
When students return to Mariemont, they will be surprised to see new furniture, carpets and freshly painted classrooms (both inside and out). Modernized classrooms have been fitted with new dry-erase activity tables, desks, chairs, comfy reading seating and organizational bins. Each of these furniture pieces are decked out in aqua blue, bright green or a combination of both colors in a pattern design.
The modernization at Mariemont is expected to be completed later this fall. Visit Mariemont’s construction page to learn more about the campus modernization.

San Juan Unified School District is grateful for our community who continue to invest in our schools. Due to voter-approved bonds, we are able to improve and maintain 21st-century standard facilities for our students and staff. These updated facilities are the foundation of a secure and distraction-free educational experience. Learn more about how we invest in our schools by visiting our “About Our Bond Measures” webpage.
