Encina High School breaks ground on new science building
Encina High School officially broke ground on Aug. 28 for a new science building that will bring modern, hands-on learning spaces to students for years to come.
The groundbreaking ceremony included a performance by Encina’s Black Student Union, inspiring remarks from students and staff and the presentation of certificates from local officials who joined the celebration.

The new facility will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and labs designed to support real-world learning in science, technology, engineering and other fields.
Alongside the science building, Encina’s broader modernization project will include upgrades to classrooms, the cafeteria, administrative offices, locker rooms and the library.
Encina Principal Greta Scholtes highlighted the importance of the moment for the school community.
“This moment is about more than just breaking ground. It’s about breaking new ground for our students’ opportunities, their learning and their future. Encina has a proud history, a resilient spirit and an incredibly talented and dedicated staff who show up every day to inspire our students,” Scholtes said during the ceremony.
Board President Ben Avey shared how the design will keep students’ futures in mind.
“It's going to be built in a way that can adapt and innovate over time because we know science changes,” he said. “While it’s not the entire school, it’s a strong step forward for the students and giving them opportunities in those new spaces. Today represents progress for the school. It represents a great opportunity for the community to come together as we all reinvest and re-engage in a new way at Encina.”
Student speaker Ojehi reflected on how the project represents the community’s belief in Encina.
“This science building is a big step forward, but it's also just one part of the larger changes happening on our campus from near learning spaces to upgrading facilities. The modernization shows us shows how much our districts and Community believes in Encina's future,” she said.
Robin, another student speaker who participated in the ceremony, expressed his excitement for how incoming students will be able to learn in these new classrooms.
“I never imagined I'd be part of great changes happening in school. And from this new science building to improvements all around the campus. This modernization shows us that students matter and that our education matters. And it's exciting to know that my younger siblings and future students will get to learn in spaces that are modern, safe, and inspiring,” he said.

District leaders, community members and representatives from local, state and federal offices attended the ceremony, underscoring the strong support for Encina and its students.
The science building project is part of San Juan Unified’s broader commitment to upgrading school facilities districtwide through voter-approved bond measures. The work is being carried out by partners Kitchell, Core Construction and Lionakis, in partnership with the district’s Facilities, Construction and Modernization team.
The modernization follows the recent relocation of Katherine Johnson Middle School to its new Kent Drive campus, paving the way for Encina’s campus improvements.
Encina’s modernization is expected to be completed in Fall 2026.
