From Guatemala to graduation: Encina High School twins celebrate the end of a chapter

As their final year at Encina High School comes to an end, Marleny and Mariela Garcia Lopez reflect on their journey from Guatemala to graduation.

In 2022, the Garcia Lopez twins underwent a drastic change in their lives as they returned to the United States and enrolled at Encina toward the end of their freshman year. 

Moving to another country was not the only adversity Marleny and Mariela experienced. A year before their big move, they had lost their mother, which resulted in them dropping out of school.

Marleny shared that she was ready to give up after day two at Encina. “It was hard for me, I did not understand anything. I would hear others talk, but I did not know what to do,” said Marleny.

Mariela also encountered challenges due to the language barrier, as well as a lack of motivation. She did not imagine herself making it to graduation, she was focused on learning rather than passing.

“It wasn’t until I saw other students graduate and all the end-of-year celebrations, it brought me joy but also pressure,” said Mariela. 

Through it all, the sisters were each other’s support system. While Mariela had her strengths in math and supported Marleny, Marleny supported Mariela by giving her a heads up on topics discussed in the subjects they both took. 

The twins received guidance from multiple staff members at Encina, but school/community intervention assistant Juanita Gonzalez left a lasting impact on their lives. 

Gonzalez supported Mariela and Marleny through language barriers and navigating a new educational system. She was assigned to support the newcomer students at Encina. Upon their arrival, Gonzalez supported the Garcia Lopez twins in understanding the school’s rules, communicating with their teachers and overall, cheering them on.

Fast forward to their senior year, the Garcia Lopez sisters are on track to graduate and were recognized at their school’s senior awards ceremony. The students received a certificate from the President’s Education Awards Program in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement. 

Having adjusted to Encina, Marleny joined the girls' varsity soccer team. She played defense for the team for two and a half years, but ultimately had to make the decision to leave the sport, as she had to prioritize her work. 

“I know that work is important. I know that I have to take on certain responsibilities as each year passes by, even if it means leaving one thing for another,” shared Marleny. 

As first-generation students, the Garcia Lopez twins take pride and joy in completing high school and pursuing higher education with a focus on nursing. Both sisters will be attending local community colleges, including Sacramento City College and American River College.

Their personal experiences have motivated them to pursue a career as nurses. Marleny and Mariela have a passion for helping others and look forward to a career where they can do so.

Desde Guatemala hasta su graduación: Hermanas gemelas de Encina High School celebran el fin de un capítulo 

Llegando al cierre de su último año en Encina High School, Marleny y Mariela Garcia Lopez reflexionan sobre su camino desde Guatemala hasta la graduación.

En 2022, las gemelas Garcia Lopez vivieron por un cambio drástico en sus vidas cuando regresaron a los Estados Unidos y se inscribieron en Encina hacia el final de su primer año de preparatoria.

El traslado a otro país no fue la única prueba que tuvieron que superar Marleny y Mariela. Un año antes de su gran mudanza, perdieron a su madre, lo que las llevó a abandonar la escuela.

Marleny dijo que estaba dispuesta a rendirse después del segundo día en Encina. “Para mi fue un poco difícil, no entendía nada. Estaban hablando pero yo no sabia que hacer,” compartió Marleny

Mariela también tuvo dificultades por la barrera del idioma y la falta de motivación. No se imaginaba a sí misma graduándose, estaba más centrada en aprender que en pasar de curso.

“Yo entrando a high school, lo único era estudiar. Los maestros hablaban de graduarse pero a mi no me llamaba la atención. Hasta el año once, en donde veía a mis compañeros graduarse y al ver todo lo que hacen al final. Se siente emocionante y a la vez nervioso,” dijo Mariela.

A pesar de todo, las hermanas se apoyaban entre ellas. Mientras Mariela tenía sus fortalezas en matemáticas y apoyaba a Marleny, Marleny apoyaba a Mariela informándola sobre los temas discutidos en las clases que ambas cursaban.

Las gemelas recibieron asesoramiento de varios miembros del personal de Encina, pero la ayudante de intervención escolar/comunitaria Juanita Gonzalez dejó un impacto inolvidable en sus vidas.

Gonzalez ayudó a Mariela y Marleny a superar las barreras del idioma y a adaptarse a un nuevo sistema educativo. Fue asignada para apoyar a los estudiantes recién llegados a Encina. A su llegada, Gonzalez ayudó a las gemelas Garcia Lopez a familiarizarse con las normas de la escuela, a comunicarse con sus profesores y, sobre todo, a animarlas.

Las hermanas Garcia Lopez están en camino de graduarse y fueron reconocidas en la ceremonia de entrega de premios de su escuela. Las estudiantes recibieron un certificado del Programa de Premios a la Educación del Presidente de los Estados Unidos en reconocimiento a sus extraordinarios logros académicos.

Cuando Marleny se adaptó a Encina, se unió al equipo de fútbol femenino. Jugó de defensa en el equipo durante dos años y medio, pero al final decidió dejar el deporte porque tenía que dar prioridad a su trabajo.

“Se que trabajar es algo importante. Cada año que pasa, se que tengo que tomar responsabilidades, y aunque tengo que dejar unas para empezar otras,” dijo Marleny.

Como estudiantes de primera generación, las gemelas Garcia Lopez se sienten orgullosas y alegres de haber terminado la escuela preparatoria y de continuar su educación superior con un enfoque en enfermería. Ambas hermanas asistirán a colegios comunitarios locales, incluyendo Sacramento City College y American River College.

Sus experiencias personales las han motivado a seguir una carrera como enfermeras. A Marleny y Mariela les apasiona ayudar a los demás y esperan tener una carrera en la que puedan hacerlo.
