Mariemont Elementary School breaks ground on modernization project
Excitement filled the chilly air on Dec. 8 as Mariemont Elementary School students, staff, families and community members broke ground on the school’s new modernization project. This ceremony marks a milestone for Mariemont, as these highly anticipated improvements will bring much-needed repairs to classrooms.
“What began as leaky roof and window repairs here and there, eventually turned into a larger need for a full modernization project,” said Principal Cris Petroni. “Students and staff are ready to see these much-needed renovations happen at our school.”
Now that ground has been broken, Mariemont’s facilities will begin making progress toward 21st-century standards. Key features of this modernization include the installation of brand-new roofing, air conditioning units, teaching walls, carpet and furniture. Interior and exterior painting will also be completed during this project, which will bring a refreshed appearance to the school.
Several of Mariemont’s fourth-grade students highlighted that they are most looking forward to new furniture, technology and a renovated space to learn.
- “What I’m most excited about is whiteboards with storage behind them, because you can hide things in there. I also really like that the whiteboards are big, so everyone in class can see what’s on them,” said fourth-grade student Henley Ljung.
- “I am excited about the new construction that will update our classrooms and make our school more beautiful. I love the new interactive TVs that we will be getting in each class,” said fourth-grade student Yana Mirabell.
- “I am excited about new furniture for our classrooms. We currently have unique seating in our classes, with different tables and chairs. Having new desks and chairs for the school will be really cool,” said fourth-grade student Ella Jauregui.
- “I’m mostly excited for new air conditioning, because it gets quite warm in Sacramento,” said fourth-grade student Sevy Del Real. “Thank you so much for coming here today and making this possible for all of us.”
The project, funded through voter-approved bonds, is expected to be completed in fall 2024. Stay up to date with Mariemont’s modernization by visiting its construction page and signing up for its construction newsletter updates.
