Rio Americano High School’s Playathon takes over campus for 16 hours
Dating back to 1981, Playathon has become an established tradition at Rio Americano High School, where students not only perform live music for 16 hours but also foster a community of belonging and raise funds in support of the band program.

Throughout the school day, Rio Americano students experienced a variety of music and bands across campus. The event also featured performances alongside elementary and middle school musicians, a public concert and a dance for students to end the day.
For students like twelfth grader Preston, this year’s Playathon was a special and inspiring experience. He reminisced about his participation over the years, from being one of the elementary students who visited Rio Americano for the event to now paying it forward by playing alongside elementary and middle school students this year.

Band director Josh Murray emphasized the importance of involving elementary and middle school musicians.
“We believe so strongly in what music does and what music at Rio does that we really want younger students to see it and then play music wherever they are,” said Murray.
The 44th annual event was primarily student-driven, providing students the opportunity to gain leadership, event planning and communication skills.
“It helped me push myself because I didn’t really see myself as a leader, but now I’m doing a lot of stuff in the Playathon committee,” shared Jane, a twelfth grader.
