San Juan Sings brings students together in celebration of music

San Juan Unified School District’s annual San Juan Sings event once again showcased the incredible talents of student choirs across the district. Held regionally on March 18  and March 25, the event brought together students from various schools to perform as one, highlighting the power of music in education and the community.

The event includes two performances each year, with schools grouped by region, so more students have the opportunity to participate. According to Michael Dittmer, program specialist for visual and performing arts, San Juan Sings has been a part of the district for nearly 15 years.

“It started as a small event at Sunrise Mall, where choirs would perform as part of an art fair. Over time, it grew into a district-wide event that brings students of all ages together on one stage,” he shared.

Choir directors Mica Dugan and Tessa Kelly shared that preparing for San Juan Sings takes months of hard work and coordination.

“There’s a lot that goes into it; we work with other schools, adjust things along the way and make sure every choir is in sync. But in the end, seeing the students perform makes it all worth it,” said Dugan.

One of the most exciting aspects of the event is how it brings students together.

“It’s really fun to see my students interact with others from different schools,” said Kelly. “They also get to see the younger choirs perform, and it’s wonderful to watch their faces light up when everyone sings together.”

For students, San Juan Sings is more than just a performance. Many of them shared how being in choir has helped them build confidence and grow as individuals. Nick, a student from Mira Loma High School, said, “Choir has made me more confident. It’s helped me feel comfortable asking questions and finding my own voice.”

Kylie, another performer from Del Campo High School added, “I used to be really quiet, but being in choir has helped me step out of my shell and make more friends.”

Choir provides a way for students to express themselves. Emily from El Camino Fundamental High School reflected on how music has been a positive outlet, “I was always full of energy as a kid, and choir has helped me channel that. Instead of being restless, I get to put that energy into singing and just enjoy the moment.”

Dittmer emphasized the lasting impact of events like this on students.

“Choral music offers a different opportunity for students who may struggle with playing an instrument. It teaches them teamwork, collaboration, and the joy of creating something together,” he said. 

As the final performance wrapped up, the energy in the room reflected what San Juan Sings is all about; a shared love for music, connection and the joy of performing together.
