San Juan Unified parents find support through English Learner Advisory Committees

Raihana Safi, a parent from Dyer-Kelly Elementary School, has found confidence in helping her newcomer student with the support of her school’s English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). 

“We moved from Afghanistan recently, everything was new to us, especially the school system,” shared Safi. “Attending ELAC meetings has helped me understand how to support my child’s education.”

San Juan Unified School District’s ELACs are available at 57 school sites to support multicultural families in navigating the education system, sharing district resources and schoolwide updates. 

Schools with 21 or more English learners (ELs) are required to establish an ELAC. The committees must also ensure that the percentage of EL parents or guardians involved in the ELAC is equivalent to the student body that their children represent.

“ELAC allows families to come to the school site regardless of the language they speak and we can communicate with them about the things happening at school,” said Anasia Hill, English Language Development (ELD) teacher at Dyer-Kelly. 

Staff that lead the ELAC meetings at their schools sites have a task to find the information that parents need and want.

ELD teacher from Coyle Avenue Elementary, Miiko Earley, prepares and reviews parent interest surveys to find topics to add to her ELAC meeting agenda throughout the school year. 

“It is time for them to share their voice as their student or family needs,” said Earley.

Providing equitable practices is important for these committees. Interpreters are invited to support in sharing the information and answering questions in the parents’ native language. 

Hill shared the practices that strengthen her school community, “whether it is through acknowledgment, representation, interpreters and providing documentation in different languages.”

“I always encourage other parents to attend ELAC. It makes a difference for both parents and kids,” said Dyer-Kelly parent Bulbul Samimi.

Los padres del Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Juan encuentran apoyo a través de los Comités Asesores de Padres de Aprendices de Inglés

Raihana Safi, una madre de familia en Dyer-Kelly Elementary School, ha encontrado confianza para ayudar a su estudiante recién llegado con el apoyo del Comité Asesor de Padres de Aprendices de inglés (ELAC, por sus siglas en inglés) de su escuela. 

"Nos mudamos de Afganistán recientemente, todo era nuevo para nosotros, especialmente el sistema escolar", compartió Safi. "Asistir a las reuniones de ELAC me ha ayudado a entender cómo apoyar la educación de mi hijo".

Los ELAC están disponibles en 57 planteles escolares del Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Juan para apoyar a las familias multiculturales en la navegación del sistema educativo, compartiendo los recursos del distrito y las actualizaciones de toda la escuela. 

Las escuelas que tienen 21 o más estudiantes aprendices de inglés (EL, por sus siglas en inglés) deben establecer un ELAC. Los comités también deben asegurarse de que el porcentaje de padres o tutores EL involucrados en el ELAC sea equivalente al cuerpo estudiantil que sus hijos representan.

“El ELAC permite que las familias vengan a la escuela sin importar el idioma que hablen, y podemos comunicarnos con ellos sobre lo que pasa en la escuela,” dijo Anasia Hill, maestra de Desarrollo de Inglés (ELD) en Dyer-Kelly. 

El personal que dirige las reuniones de ELAC en cada escuela se encarga de encontrar la información que los padres necesitan y quieren.

La maestra de ELD en Coyle Avenue Elementary School, Miiko Earley, prepara y revisa encuestas para saber qué temas son importantes para los padres y agregarlos a las reuniones de ELAC durante el año escolar.

“Es el momento para que los padres compartan sus ideas y hablen sobre lo que necesitan sus hijos o su familia,” dijo Earley.

Estas reuniones también promueven prácticas justas. Se invita a intérpretes para ayudar a compartir la información y responder preguntas en la lengua materna de los padres.

La maestra Hill compartió lo que ayuda a fortalecer su comunidad escolar: “ya sea a través del reconocimiento, la representación, los intérpretes o dar documentos en diferentes idiomas.”

"Siempre animo a otros padres a asistir a ELAC. Hace una gran diferencia tanto para los padres como para los niños", dijo Bulbul Samimi, madre de familia en Dyer-Kelly.

والدین در حوزه تعلیمی سن هوان از طریق کمیته‌های مشورتی انگلیسی‌ آموزان (ELAC)  حمایت دریافت می‌کنند

ریحانه صفی، مادر یکی از شاگردان مکتب ابتدایه دایر-کِلی، با حمایت کمیته  مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان این مکتب، توانسته اعتماد بیشتری در راستای کمک به شاگرد تازه واردش کسب کند.  

او گفت: ”ما به‌تازگی از افغانستان آمدیم، همه چیز برای ما جدید بود، به‌ویژه سیستم تعلیمی.“ صفی افزود: ”اشتراک در نشست‌های کمیته مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان به من کمک کرد تا بدانم چطور به تعلیم فرزندم کمک نمایم.“

کمیته‌های مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان حوزه تعلیمی سن هوان در ۵۷ مکتب موجود است و از خانواده‌های چند فرهنگی در راستای آشنایی با سیستم تعلیمی، شریک نمود منابع حوزه تعلیمی و معلومات تازهٔ مربوط به مکتب‌ها حمایت می‌کنند.

مکتب‌هایی که ۲۱ یا بیشتر از آن شاگرد انگلیسی‌آموز دارند، مکلف به ایجاد کمیته مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان هستند. همچنین این کمیته ها باید اطمینان  دهند که درصد والدین یا سرپرستان شاگردان انگلیسی‌آموز در کمیته با درصد شاگردانی که نمایندگی می‌کنند، متناسب باشد.

آناسیا هیل، معلم تقویت زبان انگلیسی (ELD) در مکتب دایر-کِلی گفت”این کمیته ها به خانواده‌ها فرصت این را میدهند تا صرف‌نظر از زبانی که صحبت می‌کنند، به مکتب بیایند و ما می‌توانیم در مورد موضوعات که در مکتب اتفاق میفتد با آنها صحبت کنیم.“

کارمندانی که نشست‌های  کمیته مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان را در مکاتب شان رهبری می‌کنند، مسئولیت این را دارند تا معلوماتی دریابند که والدین به آن نیاز دارند یا به آن علاقه‌مند هستند.

مییکو ایرلی، معلم تقویت زبان انگلیسی در مکتب ابتداییه کویل اَونیو، نظرسنجی‌هایی را برای شناسایی علاقه‌مندی‌های والدین آماده و بررسی می‌کند تا موضوعات مرتبط را در طول سال به آجندای نشست‌های کمیته مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان خویش اضافه کند.

او گفت: ”این زمان آن‌هاست که صدای‌شان را بر اساس نیازهای شاگرد یا خانواده‌شان شریک بسازند.“

تأمین رویکرد های عادلانه برای این کمیته‌ها اهمیت زیادی دارد. مترجمان دعوت می‌شوند تا معلومات را در زبان مادری والدین شریک سازند و به سوالات‌شان پاسخ دهند.

هیل در مورد روش های صحبت کرد که موجب تقویت اجتماع مکت اش میشود: ”چه از طریق توجه نشان دادن (به خانواده ها و شاگردان چند فرهنگی )و نمایندگی باشد، چه با استفاده از مترجم و تهیه اسناد به زبان‌های مختلف.“

بلبل صمیمی، یکی از والدین شاگردان در مکتب دایر-کِلی گفت: ”من همیشه والدین دیگر را تشویق می‌کنم تا در کمیته های مشورتی انگلیسی آموزان شرکت کنند. این کار هم برای والدین و هم برای شاگردان تاثیرگذار است.
