The power of self-advocacy: how Mesa Verde High School’s Janessa Pena found her voice

She’s energetic, bubbly and an advocate; just a few words used to describe Mesa Verde High School student Janessa Pena.

Pena began her story at San Juan Unified School District four years ago, when she enrolled in Sylvan Middle School. Fast forward to the twelfth grade, Pena has found her voice and has a clear vision of her future.

As Pena transitioned into high school and was introduced to the Career Technical Education (CTE) programs offered at Mesa Verde, she became interested in the Business Academy. Through the program, she learned about the pathways to becoming a business entrepreneur. However, her journey shifted when she was introduced to the United States Navy.

Seeking new experiences and learning opportunities, Pena will graduate in her Navy uniform, representing her new journey.

“My family is my biggest pride and joy,” said Pena. “[Joining the military] makes me feel like I am doing something good for them and myself.”

Growing up in a Hispanic household, it was important for Pena to remember where her family came from and protect her younger siblings.

“They watch me a lot, being the older sister,” stated Pena. “I want to make sure that they could say that they are following my footsteps in a good way.”

Pena has been a member of Mesa Verde’s soccer team since her sophomore year. As a member of the varsity team, she is encouraged to succeed academically so that she can continue to play the sport she loves.

As a team player, Pena has learned to become a motivator, but also become confident in herself and handling difficult situations.

“I am comfortable with my feelings,” said Pena. “To feel confident and independent, you need to learn how to speak up. I think it is important that you speak for yourself to make sure you’re happy.”

Pena also understood the importance of asking for help, and at Mesa Verde she was able to identify staff members that she could trust. 

She sought out Mesa Verde’s School Community Intervention Assistant Darik Belton to communicate her struggles. Belton has served as a key support staff member for Pena, providing her family with the resources needed.

“It means a lot to be able to go to someone here at school and explain everything to them,” shared Pena. “They are welcoming and they want to help.”

It was important for Pena to have a support system at school as she prioritized her mental health. “She did not let hurt overcome, she pulled people in who can help and are trained to help,” said Spencer Murrish, Business Academy teacher at Mesa Verde. 

Murrish expressed the growth he witnessed from Pena in the past two years. “The biggest thing that stands out about her is that we all see her self-advocate for her best opportunities,” said Murrish. “I’ve seen her go to outreach or counselors, she will voice what she needs.”

Murrish emphasized that Pena is prepared to take on her post-high school journey as a leader with the strength, perseverance and dedication he saw in her. “She is going to take it into a career of service to other people, it stands out,” affirmed Murrish.

El poder de la defensa de si mismo: cómo Janessa Pena de Mesa Verde High School encontró su voz

Es energética, llena de vida y vocera; son unas palabras utilizadas para describir a la estudiante de Mesa Verde High School, Janessa Pena.

La historia de Pena en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Juan inicio hace cuatro años, cuando fue inscrita en Sylvan Middle School. Ya en el duodécimo grado, Pena ha encontrado su voz y tiene una visión clara de su futuro.

Cuando Pena llego a la escuela preparatoria y conoció los programas de Educación Técnica Profesional (CTE, por sus siglas en ingles) que se ofrecen en Mesa Verde, tomo interés en la Academia de Negocios. A través del programa, aprendió sobre los trayectos para convertirse en empresaria. Sin embargo, cuando fue introducida a la Marina de los Estados Unidos, tomo un nuevo interés. 

En búsqueda de nuevas experiencias y oportunidades de aprendizaje, Pena se graduará con su uniforme de la Marina, lo que representa su nueva trayectoria.

"Mi familia es mi mayor orgullo y alegría", dijo Pena. "[Unirme a las fuerzas armadas] me hace sentir que estoy haciendo algo bueno para ellos y para mí misma."

Creciendo en un hogar hispano, era importante para Pena recordar de dónde venía su familia y proteger a sus hermanos menores.

"Me siguen [mis hermanos] mucho por ser la hermana mayor," dijo Pena. "Quiero asegurarme de que puedan decir que están siguiendo mis pasos de una buena manera."

Pena ha sido parte del equipo de fútbol de Mesa Verde desde su segundo año. Su participación en el equipo, la ha animado a tener éxito académico para que pueda seguir practicando el deporte que ama.

Como jugadora de equipo, Pena ha aprendido a convertirse en una motivadora, pero también a tener confianza en sí misma y a manejar situaciones difíciles.

"Estoy cómoda con mis sentimientos," dijo Pena. "Para sentirte segura e independiente, tienes que aprender a hablar. Creo que es importante que hables por ti mismo para asegurarte de que eres feliz."

Pena también entendió la importancia de pedir ayuda, y en Mesa Verde pudo identificar a los miembros del personal en los que podía confiar. 

Ella buscó al Asistente de Intervención Comunitaria Escolar de Mesa Verde, Darik Belton, para comunicar sus luchas. Belton ha apoyado a Pena y a su familia con la aportación de recursos necesarios.

"Significa mucho poder ir a alguien aquí en la escuela y explicarle todo," compartió Pena. "Son amables y quieren ayudar".

Para Pena era importante tener un sistema de apoyo en la escuela, ya que priorizaba su salud mental. "Ella no dejó que el dolor la superara, atrajo a personas que pueden ayudarla y están capacitadas para ayudar", dijo Spencer Murrish, maestro de la Academia de Negocios en Mesa Verde. 

Murrish expresó el crecimiento que observó de Pena en los últimos dos años. "Lo más importante que sobresale de ella es que todos la vemos abogar por sí misma y por sus mejores oportunidades," dijo Murrish. "La he visto ir a los servicios de asistencia o a los consejeros para expresar lo que necesitaba."

Murrish recalco que Pena está preparada para emprender su viaje después de la escuela preparatoria como líder con la fuerza, la perseverancia y la dedicación que vio en ella. "Va a llevar esas cualidades a una carrera de servicio a otras personas, y eso se destaca," afirmó Murrish.
