Mesa Verde Signature Project

Crews made major progress for the high school’s signature stadium project this summer. Stadium bleachers, press box, lighting, restrooms, concession stand, ticket booth and turf field have all been completed. The tennis courts and track area are nearly complete and await surfacing. Additionally, the locker rooms received new finishes including new orange accent walls and LED lighting.

Great things are happening for Mesa Verde’s signature project. Although it has faced 55 weather impact days, Mesa’s stadium is looking radiant and on-track for its Fall completion date.

Curbs and bioswales are being templated out at Mesa’s future front parking lot and student drop off. The parking lot light poles have been set and the lot is being prepped for paving. Tennis courts are making progress to be leveled out for inspection.

Varsity and junior softball fields have completed renovations and are ready for the next softball season to begin. A new scoreboard sign now adorns the stadium.

The football field and stadium feature newly-installed, bright green bleachers. The concession building has been decked out with kitchen appliances and counter space for future home games. Bathrooms have been furnished with toilet stalls, sinks and mirrors.

As the stadium moves into its next phase, track and field amenities are beginning to take shape. The dirt path surrounding the football field will soon be leveled out for a new running track. Spaces for the long-jump pit and discus court have been designated outside the stadium’s future track.

Unfortunately, the rainy season has brought the Mesa Verde stadium construction to 42 weather impact days. Due to weather-related schedule impacts, the stadium is targeted to be completed by late October to early November 2023.

Mesa Verde’s new football field now hosts turf, goal posts and the foundations of stadium lighting. The remainder of the front parking lot has been demolished to make room for tennis courts, a drop-off circle and additional student parking.

More than 100 students, staff, parents and community members gathered to celebrate the start of the construction with a groundbreaking ceremony. Thank you to all who attended! After the official groundbreaking, parents, staff and community members were invited to take a photo in front of the new stadium site with a hard hat and a shovel. 

On April 7, 2022, San Juan Unified held a meeting with the community surrounding Mesa Verde High School. That meeting was held to allow district officials to hear the concerns about the proposed project including traffic, lighting, sound and other issues. The meeting included a full overview of the initial project design, an overview of construction logistics and a Q&A breakout.

The district is currently reviewing having a volume limiter installed on the PA system to control/cap the decibel levels on sporting events and for user groups. Additionally, the district is exploring adding vision and noise control louvers on the top of the bleachers (home side), as well as exploring planting evergreen trees along the home side of the stadium.

The district will be meeting with the adjacent homeowners (those properties that directly back up to the fields) on fencing options.

The facility will be closed to the public during school hours. After hours, weekends, and holidays will be up to the discretion of the Facilities Business Department and a permit is required for outside groups. Please visit www.sanjuan.edu/civicpermits for more information.

No, this project will be connected to the current facilities for supplying water. The district has partnered with the local water district on a water main expansion project that will benefit the water district and local community.

The project will require a fair amount of grading of existing soil and may disturb small animals and reptiles.

The gate at Volta Way will be replaced to secure the site during school hours of operations, and may remain closed during sporting events to prevent promoting parking in the adjacent neighborhood.

Not at this time. Current plans include increasing parking on-site by 100 additional spots.
