Safe Schools Overview
San Juan Unified maintains strong relationships with our local law enforcement partners. The Safe Schools team works collaboratively with both the Citrus Heights Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department to support those school sites within their respective jurisdictions. Law Enforcement may be called to assist and support our safety specialists and school sites with investigations or concerns regarding threats of school violence as well as crimes occurring on campus, including those involving weapons or persons in possession of alcohol or other dangerous substances.
The Safe Schools team is a San Juan Unified School District resource and not an extension of or directly affiliated with any law enforcement agency. Community Safety Specialists (CSS) are not law enforcement officers, nor are they campus security guards. They are highly knowledgeable and trained school district professionals who specialize in addressing school safety concerns and support school communities to improve overall campus safety.
Each CSS is assigned to a "zone" and provides support to several schools. Each zone is anchored by a high school and includes those elementary, middle and K8 sites associated within its general geographic area.
Each school has an established safety team that includes staff and student family representatives. School safety teams collaborate to review existing site safety practices and identify pathways to improve overall campus safety. Community Safety Specialists play a key role in guiding these teams in the development of strategies to increase school safety while creating a community culture that promotes academic success and social, emotional development. Each safety team is responsible for the creation and annual review of an effective Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP). In compliance with the California Education Code, CSSP’s are updated annually. CSSP’s serve as the foundation for all school site safety practices and address specific emergency procedures including specific response tactics and roles as applicable.
Comprehensive School Safety Plans
Every San Juan Unified School has a Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP) that is updated annually in compliance with the California Education Code. CSSP’s serve as the foundation for all school site safety practices and address specific emergency procedures including response tactics and roles as applicable. CSSP’s may be viewed online as well as in person at each school site.
