Cyber Safety

In San Juan Unified, we take student safety seriously. To assist our teachers in educating our students about how to be upstanding and safe digital citizens, we have created this comprehensive website to provide a digital citizenship curriculum for grades K-12, professional development for staff, and resources for parents and families.

The Children’s Internet Protection Act or (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 to address concerns about children’s access to harmful content on the Internet. In 2011, CIPA was updated with certain requirements for schools. Schools subject to CIPA have two important requirements. First, Internet safety policies must include monitoring the online activities of minors; and second, as required by the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act, they must educate minors regarding appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and cyber bullying awareness and response.

In response to these new CIPA requirements, San Juan Unified has partnered with Common Sense Media, which provides an extensive Digital Citizenship and Cyber safety curriculum for our teachers. Topics include Internet Safety, Privacy & Security, Relationships and Communication, Cyber Bullying, Digital Footprint and Reputation, Self Image and Identity, Information Literacy and Creative Credit and Copyright. All lessons are interactive and aligned to Common Core State Standards.
