School Policies and Procedures
All members of the school community have a responsibility to establish and maintain a positive learning environment. Working together, we can achieve this common goal.
Reporting Absences Through out the Year
If your child will be absent or tardy we ask that you call the Student Absence number 979-8189 and leave a message. This line is on twenty-four hours a day. These recorded messages will be compared with the teacher’s daily attendance record to make sure that all children are accounted for. If your child is absent and you have not called the Student Absence number, you will be called to verify your child’s absence. The District is requiring a note from Dr., Dentist, Counseling, and etc., for your student’s absences. This will soon be mandatory by the State in order to have your student excused for the absence. Systematic Plan for Teaching Appropriate BehaviorTeachers will teach the School Climate Policy to students the first week of school. Rules and procedures will be emphasized and repeated as necessary.
- A copy of the School Climate Policy will be sent home for parents/guardians to review with their students. Parent signature acknowledging the understanding of the policy is required.
- Each new student and parent will receive a copy of the School Climate Policy.
- The School Climate Policy will be reviewed in each classroom each trimester.
- Rules are posted in each classroom in clear view.
- Problem solving techniques will be taught in each classroom to help students define the problem, be able to communicate the problem to others, develop possible solutions and identify which solution to try next time. Second Step curriculum is used school-wide to teach empathy, impulse control and anger management.
Carmichael School has implemented the Positive Behavior Support Program. This program links positive behavior with the school rules: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe. Carmichael Information Form is used to gather data that determines the school focus for activities to encourage appropriate behavior. Activities called Booster Activities are used to target and teach appropriate behavior using positive reinforcement. When students use inappropriate behavior, a system of progressive discipline is used.
- First Infraction, Intervention Step 1: Staff will conference and counsel with the student, review the rules and appropriate choices and issue a warning. Once rules and procedures have been thoroughly taught and in effect for a period of time and depending on severity of infraction*, staff may move student to another level of discipline. Some inappropriate behavior warrants a particular disciplinary action as dictated by Ed. Code.
- Second Infraction, Intervention Step 2: Staff may go over intervention step 1. In addition, the parent may be called, student/principal conference held, or other consequences as appropriate to the infraction. A Carmichael Information Form will be written. A Think Sheet or Follow Up Agreement to be signed by the parent will be attached to the Carmichael Information Form to guide the student in the problem solving process.
- Third Infraction, Intervention Step 3: Staff will fill out a Carmichael Information Form and notify the parent. Other steps may include, but are not limited to student/principal conference, student/parent/principal contact. Behavior contract/plan for improvement, may possibly be home/school communication plan, in-house suspension for the remainder of the day, and/or off site suspension. A Think sheet or Follow Up Agreement to be signed by the parent will be attached to the Carmichael Information Form to guide the student in the problem solving process.
- Fourth Infraction, Intervention Step 4: Staff will issue Carmichael Information Form. A conference with the parent will be held to discuss and review the behavior plan. The student may be placed on in-house suspension or off-site suspension or have an alternative means of correction as recommended by the teacher and principal. Due to the severity of the infraction suspension will be seriously considered. A Think Sheet or Follow Up agreement to be signed by the parent will be completed by the student to guide in the problem solving process.
- NOTE: Carmichael Information Form must be signed by the parent and returned to the homeroom teacher the next day. If the Carmichael Information Form is not returned to school, the student will call home and receive recess detention. If a student develops a pattern of not returning Carmichael Information Form to school, she/he may be suspended for defiance.
- Recess Detention: Student loses privilege of playing on the playground. Student may sit out during recess or be assigned to another classroom during recess.
- In-House Suspension: Student attends school in another class and completes assigned class work.
- Cafeteria Detention: Student may be asked to sit at a table other then the homeroom class or sit away from the table. Students throwing food will pick up litter in the cafeteria.
- Logical Consequence/School Service: For some student’s misbehavior, the consequence is directly related to the misbehavior. This might include school clearing tasks, assisting in a classroom or otherwise “working off” their consequence. Students may also be required to pay for any damages. Example: A student who throws the wood chips out of the bar or picnic area may be required to sweep them up and place them back in the bar and picnic area.
- Parents Attending School: On occasion, we request that a parent attend school with their child or come to observe their child.
For more serious rule violations, a higher level of disciplinary action, including suspension, will be issued.Examples:
- Rough Behavior/Fighting
- Disrespect of Adults/Peers
- Abuse of School Property
- Disrupting Classes in Session
- Racial Slurs
- Restroom Abuse
- Sexual Harassment
- Continued Profanity
- Bike Abuse
Sexual Harassment Prevention
Sexual harassment is a form of personal misconduct that undermines the integrity of social and academic relationships. No individual student, male or female, should be subject to sexual overtures or conduct, either verbal, visual, or physical.
- Verbal Harassment – Derogatory Comments or Slurs: Examples are name calling, belittling, sexually explicit or degrading words to describe an individual, sexually explicit jokes, comments about a student’s anatomy and/or dress, sexually oriented noises or remarks, questions about a person’s sexual preference, use of patronizing terms or remarks, verbal abuse, graphic verbal commentaries about the body.
- Visual Harassment – Derogatory Drawings, Cartoons, or Posters: Examples are displaying sexual pictures, writing or objects, obscene letters or invitations, staring at a student’s anatomy, leering, sexually oriented gestures, displayed private parts, unwanted love letters or notes.
- Physical Harassment – Assault, Impeding or Blocking Movement or Any Physical Interference with Normal Work or Movement, When Directed at an Individual: Examples are Touching pinching, patting, grabbing, kissing, brushing against or poking another student’s body.
- Tell the person to stop offensive behavior and notify a teacher or supervising adult. The adult will notify the Principal.
- If unable or uncomfortable to confront the person or if the behavior persists, tell the teacher or supervising adult who will investigate and issue a Carmichael Information Form and call the parent of the offender if the behavior is confirmed.
- If behavior persists, disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and/or expulsion, will be taken.
Contacting a Teacher
Teachers welcome notes and calls. Conferences can easily be arranged. Teachers are usually available to accept telephone calls after 3:30 p.m. All teachers have voice mail and e-mail. Each are checked daily for messages. The office staff will take messages in an emergency or transfer calls to the teacher’s voice mailbox. The number for voice mail is 971-8190 and the box number is the two-digit classroom number, for example room 1 is box number “01.For most teachers e-mail address, use the first letter of a teacher’s name followed by the last name then add @sanjuan.edu. Some newer addresses require the complete first name followed by a period then the last name. Complete the address by adding @sanjuan.edu. Check with the office or teacher if there are conflicts.
The bus transportation schedule will be posted in the office window. Transportation will be provided to students living in the bus zone beginning with the first day of school. For transportation questions, please call the school at 971-5727 and dial the option for transportation.
Car Drop off/Pick up
Students may be dropped off and picked up in the drive through area located in front of the school. Parents drive in the right lane and should pull forward as far as possible before stopping to unload their children. Please remember there is a stop sign in the middle of the drive through area. Children will report to Multi-Purpose room (cafeteria) and be released to the playground from there. Students are not to walk in the hallways. Do not leave your vehicle unattended at any time in the loading lane. Also remember to park in the designated parking spaces available. Cars should not park in the drive through area or where there is not a designated parking space. The bicycle racks are located next to the 1st grade playground.
To exit, you need to follow the drive through area completely around and exit to the left behind the White House Counseling Center. The area in front of the Multi-Purpose room is the bus drop off and pick up zone. Please remember that if the buses are dropping off, and you are parked near the bus area, you will need to wait until the buses have departed before exiting your parking space.

Breakfast is served from 8:10-8:40. Current month breakfast and lunch menus are sent home at the start of the month with the Parent Newsletter.
If it is necessary for your child to take medication deemed necessary for pupils who have potentially life-threatening medical conditions or who need medication administered during the school day in order to interact appropriately in the school setting, a Physician’s Referral Form must be completed and on file in the school office. The medical form is available in the school office and must be renewed at the beginning of each school year. Medication, with the exceptions noted below, will be kept, locked in the school office and will be dispensed through the office. Students may keep asthma inhalers and bee sting kits with them if they are responsible, but the medical form authorizing this must still be on file in the school office. Medication must be brought to the school office in the original container by the parent.
Update Emergency Contact Information Online
Contacts must be updated at least once per year. To update your contacts online simply login to the Parent Portal using your PIN and password. At the top of the screen click the “re-enroll” link and follow the prompts. https://sis.sanjuan.edu/parentportalPlease take your time to fill these out neatly and accurately. You will need to put as many emergency contacts as possible to ensure that we can get a hold of someone in case of an emergency. Remember to update emergency cards throughout the year with new contacts or for numbers that have been changed.
A Carmichael folder and other important information will be sent home with students on the first day of school. If you have any questions please call the school office at 971-5727.
