Board Briefs: Sept. 14, 2021
Here are a few highlights from the Sept. 14 board meeting:
Update provided on summer 2021 learning opportunities
Staff highlighted the innovative programs and opportunities that occurred this summer for both student and adult learning. As a result of distance and hybrid learning in the 2021 school year, San Juan Unified used the existing summer school funds as well as the Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Grant to support and expand summer programs.
Over the next three years, the ELO Grant will provide the district the opportunity to implement a comprehensive and responsive learning recovery program. In an effort to be responsive with the allocations, sites were given local control to determine what actions would best meet the needs of students based on conducting a needs assessment.
This summer our school sites, collaborating with community partners, created high-interest learning opportunities for students across the district. Each site was able to create and build programs to meet the needs of all students.
In addition, summertime in San Juan Unified typically serves as a powerful launching point for professional learning and this summer was even more critical, as a result, adult learning was also a key area of focus. In preparation for a return to in-person, full-time instruction, San Juan Unified staff had a wide variety of ways to connect and engage in professional learning. Whether it was learning-teams, book studies, in-person, or virtual, certificated, classified, and management engaged in professional development focused on equity, curriculum and instruction, technology, and social emotional strategies and supports.
Update provided on district’s COVID-19 safety efforts
Staff shared that the district’s COVID-19 safety plan was updated last week. The latest version can be found at https://www.sanjuan.edu/covidsafetyplans. This update includes a number of revisions including the latest California Department of Public Health guidance on band, choir, drama and athletics, a new section that allows for and provides safety precautions for limited field trips, and a new section on physical education and dance.
COVID-19 testing is currently being provided twice a week for students and staff at the district. Please visit www.sanjuan.edu/covidtest for more information. The district is working to expand testing opportunities at school sites, with the goal of having testing opportunities available at each school site in the near future.
