Here are a few highlights from the March 14 board meeting (the full agenda packet is available):
Update provided on the San Juan Youth Voice Advocates program
Staff provided the board with an update on the San Juan Youth Voice Advocates (SJYVA) student leadership program. SJYVA are a team of high school students who elevate student voice in San Juan Unified by engaging students in listening sessions to help inform the district's Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). The program consists of 23 youth voice advocates, including six peer mentors, with members from ten high schools. The program is supported by staff, as well as community partner Innovation Bridge. The full presentation is available.
Board hears updates on the district’s Nutrition Services department
Staff also shared updates from the Nutrition Services department with the board. Beginning in the 2022–23 school year, AB 130 established a California Universal Meals Program with changes to the state meal mandate. San Juan Unified offers both breakfast and lunch options to all students. Breakfast selected by students must have the number of food items required and include at least one fruit. Lunch selected by students must have the number of food components required and include at least one fruit or vegetable. Additionally, meals offered must follow meal patterns established by USDA and meet weekly dietary specifications for calories (minimum levels) in whole grains, milk, saturated fats, sodium, and zero grams of trans fats per serving. The full presentation is available.
