The California Department of Public Health and Sacramento County Public Health today issued modified guidance related to COVID-19 safety measures in schools. The areas most affected by changes in the guidance include student events (i.e., dances), a possible expansion of modified quarantine eligibility to before and after school programs, and travel for athletic competitions.
While new guidance had been anticipated, the specifics of the guidance were not known and district staff are working to quickly assess what impacts they may have locally. Until reviewed and adopted as part of the district’s COVID-19 safety plan, the changes in guidance issued today do not change existing practices or procedures in San Juan Unified schools. Staff expect to complete review and update the district’s safety plan by late next week.
District staff and board members have heard many suggestions from our students, families and staff on how we might be able to restore some events with reasonable safety precautions in place. Work has been underway on the topic in consultation with other public and private school systems, health officials, and input from site administrators and activity directors. With today’s additional published guidance, we now expect to have protocols adopted in our next safety plan revision by late next week.
