Board Briefs: Nov. 15, 2022
Here are a few highlights from the Nov. 15 board meeting (the full agenda packet is available):
Board holds workshop on and certifies the Environmental Impact Report for the Katherine Johnson Middle School new construction project
A board workshop was held to review and discuss the final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Katherine Johnson Middle School new construction project at the current Creekside location. The EIR determined that the proposed project would result in significant and unavoidable adverse impacts only as to construction and operational noise. All other potentially significant impacts can be feasibly mitigated to a less than significant level.
A draft EIR was circulated for public review and comments starting on Sept. 15 and the 45-day public review period ended on Oct. 31. The comments received on the draft EIR were reviewed by AECOM and district staff, and responses were prepared and provided to all commenting agencies on Nov. 4. A final EIR containing minor edits to the text of the draft EIR and responses to all comments received was published on Nov. 8.
The board adopted a resolution certifying the final EIR, adopted the CEQA Findings of Fact and Statement of Overriding Considerations, adopted a Mitigated Monitoring and Reporting Program (MMRP), approved the Katherine Johnson Middle School new construction project, and directed that a Notice of Determination be filed for the project.
Board hears update on the district’s family and community engagement efforts
Staff provided the board with an update on the activities and actions of the district’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team. The FACE team works to connect schools, families and community in support of student success. The presentation highlighted the recent work by the team and its partners, including:
Bringing services to students and families through the new FACE Mobile and in partnership with school sites through the Neighborhood Learning Project.
The expansion of partner opportunities, such as more resources dedicated toward volunteer development, supporting the San Juan Education Foundation, adding community supports and implementing a college fellows program.
Implementation of new processes for welcoming students enrolling in the district, expanding family workshops, and broadening the reach of the community schools grant.
