San Juan Unified schools closed starting March 16
Update - Monday, March 16
This message is available in Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Russian and Ukrainian.
We continue to closely monitor developments related to COVID-19 in partnership with other school districts as well as local and state health officials. At this time, all San Juan Unified schools remain closed through Sunday, April 12.
We remain committed to providing updates daily, as needed, in this rapidly evolving matter. In the meantime, we will use this opportunity to answer some of the common questions that have surfaced from families in recent days:
How long are schools closed?
All schools are scheduled to be closed through spring break and scheduled to reopen on Monday, April 13, unless the district receives new direction from public health, state or government officials.
What precautions should families take during the closure?
While students and staff are out of school, Sacramento County Public Health officials stress the importance that everyone maintain appropriate social distancing measures (avoiding large gatherings, staying home as much as possible, etc.). This is crucial to help slow the spread of the virus. Please visit Sacramento County Public Health’s website for more information at http://covid19.saccounty.net.
Will students have to make up this time in the summer?
Given the gravity and scale of this emergency throughout California, we expect and await direction from the state for specific instructions, including processes to apply for a waiver which would not require makeup days.
Will meals be served to students who rely on school nutrition?
San Juan Unified will provide an opportunity for families to pick up two meals daily (lunch and breakfast for the following day) in a mobile walk-up or drive-thru meal service for children 18 and under. This will begin Tuesday, March 17 at 27 school sites from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. At this time, this service will continue through Friday, April 3, Monday through Friday at the following locations:

These meals will be available free of charge for anyone 18 and under regardless of what school they attend. No paperwork is required. Children must be present in order for meals to be provided. Meals will be provided based on the number of children present. This program will be solely for the pick up of meals, and meals will not be consumed on-site. We encourage families to continue to be proactive in reducing the risk of COVID-19 by not congregating at the school site and utilizing social distancing once meals have been distributed.
I'm not receiving emergency alerts (text, email, phone, etc) from the district. What can I do?
We use our notification system to notify families and staff about relevant updates related to school closures. You can find instructions on how to update your preferences for our notification system at www.sanjuan.edu/MyNotifications.
Will enrichment opportunities be available to students during the closure?
Each school site will create a document, which will contain information on how to communicate virtually with staff members during the closure. This information will be shared with school communities later this week. We appreciate your patience while staff works to implement virtual office hours.
In addition, both the district website and each school website has a list of online enrichment resources to maintain learning during school closures. Please visit www.sanjuan.edu/onlineenrichment to see the complete list.
We will not be asking students to complete any assignments. Our intent is to provide virtual office hours to support students with enrichment opportunities.
How will Special Education students be served?
The Governor's March 13 Executive Order directs the state to issue guidelines by Tuesday, March 17 that ensures students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate education program as required by state and federal law. More details will be forthcoming after the district receives state guidance.
What about state testing?
Given the gravity and scale of this emergency throughout California, we expect and await direction from the state imminently.
We recognize that this closure will be a hardship for many families and appreciate your patience and cooperation as we help to ensure the safety and well being of our students and families.

Update - Friday, March 13
Translated versions of this message are available in Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Russian and Ukrainian.
Please know that this information and guidance is subject to change, pending any updates from state and federal officials.
We want to stress that this action is a mitigation effort and is NOT the result of a confirmed case of COVID-19 among any of our students or staff in the district. It is also done with an abundance of concern for our students, staff members and community.
We are involved in a highly fluid situation with constantly changing circumstances related to COVID-19. As we’ve shared previously, we continue to be in close contact with health officials and at their advice and in coordination with other school districts we have made the decision to close San Juan Unified campuses to students as of Monday, March 16. We will be closed to students through the end of spring break (Sunday, April 12), including athletics and all extracurricular activities.
While our school facilities will be closed, plans are being put in place for students to access optional enrichment opportunities. Each school site will create a document, which will contain information on how to communicate virtually with staff members during the closure. This information will be shared with school communities next week. We appreciate your patience while staff works to implement virtual office hours.
In addition, each school website will have a list of online enrichment resources to maintain learning during school closures. We will not be asking students to complete any assignments. Our intent is to provide virtual office hours to support students with enrichment opportunities.
While we are closed to the public, a dedicated team from our maintenance and operations department will be conducting a deep cleaning of our campuses to ensure our facilities are sanitized prior to reopening.
