Board Briefs: Feb. 9 board meeting

Here are a few highlights from last night’s board meeting:

*Superintendent Kern provided an update on a variety of items to the board. He shared that San Juan Unified continues to prepare to offer the option to return to in-person instruction once Sacramento County reaches the red tier of the state’s COVID-19 risk assessment system and agreements are in place with the district’s bargaining groups for this return.

All athletic teams that have updated their safety plans have been allowed to resume physical conditioning. Additionally, track, cross country, tennis and golf can resume competition. Superintendent Kern also shared that the district hopes to hold in-person high school graduations in June with safety precautions in place. Lastly, COVID-19 vaccinations for educators in Sacramento County are expected to begin next week.

There will be an item on the Feb. 23 board meeting agenda to provide an update on the district’s COVID-19 response and planning for spring 2021.

*This week the Bridges After-School program began offering a limited capacity in-person program to provide support to students experiencing homelessness and foster youth. Additionally, 11 new self-contained special education programs for mild or moderate need students opened this month, offering more than 100 additional students an in-person learning option four days a week.

*Staff provided the board with a mid-year update on student learning status, including attendance and grade data through the first half of the school year. Feedback from both students and parents were shared regarding experiences with distance learning. Opportunities for additional areas of support for students were discussed at all three school levels: elementary, middle and high school.
