New law expands grading and recovery options for students
A new bill, AB 104, was recently passed and provides options for students and parents/guardians to address learning recovery needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill focuses on three major areas: student retention, grading and graduation policies.
Student Retention for 2021-22
Parents/guardians of students enrolled in kindergarten through 11th grade during the 2020-21 school year who received deficient grades (D, F, or No Pass) for at least one-half of the coursework in 2020-21 may provide a written request to the school for a consultation to discuss student retention for the 2021-22 school year.
The consultation must be held within 30 calendar days of receiving the written request and a final decision issued within 10 calendar days after that meeting.

Opportunity to Change Grades to Pass No/Pass
Students who were enrolled in high school during the 2020-21 school year may apply to have one or more letter grades replaced with a Pass/No Pass grade.
Click here to view a list of post-secondary institutions that will accept Pass/No Pass grades. Some post-secondary institutions, including those in other states, may not accept a Pass/No Pass grade for admissions. Both the CSU and UC systems have issued guidance on how they will handle admissions and GPA calculations for transcripts with Pass/No Pass grades. The CSU information can be found here, and UC information can be found here. AB 104 requires CSU schools, and encourages UC and private postsecondary schools, to accept without prejudice any transcripts with Pass/No Pass grades.
Please complete this form to request a grade change for the 2020-21 school year by Aug. 17, 2021, which is within 15 days of this web posting. After Oct. 1, 2021, requests will no longer be considered.
**UPDATE** Current legislation has updated the deadline to submit the form to request a letter grade be changed to Pass or No Credit for the 2020-21 school year to Oct. 1, 2021. Requests can be made and may be considered after this date.
Students enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year of high school during the 2020-21 school year and who are not on track to graduate in four years, will be provided the opportunity to complete the state graduation requirements to graduate. The completion of the coursework required as California minimum graduation standards may continue through a fifth year of instruction.
San Juan Unified approved for the Class of 2021 the ability to graduate with a diploma for any student meeting the California State minimum graduation requirements. Following AB 104, this will be extended for the Class of 2022. The district will contact students eligible for this opportunity.
